Police Sergeant and two others arrested in ICAC operation charged with drug trafficking 27/05/2010

A Police Sergeant and two suspected members of a drug trafficking syndicate, who were amongst nine persons arrested in an ICAC corruption investigation, were today (Thursday) charged with drug trafficking and related offences, and brought to Kwun Tong Magistracy for mention in separate cases.

In the first case, the defendant, 38, Police Sergeant, faced one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

The charge alleged that the defendant unlawfully trafficked in 17 grammes of heroin at a private housing estate flat in Kowloon on May 25, 2010.

In another case, the defendant, 47, unemployed, was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug, which alleged him of unlawfully trafficking in heroin between April 1 and May 25, 2010.

The defendant also faced one count of possessing nine syringes fit and intended for the injection of a dangerous drug at a public housing estate unit in Tuen Mun on May 25, 2010.

In the remaining case, the defendant, 45, unemployed, faced one count of unlawfully trafficking in seven grammes of heroin on May 24, 2010.

Two other charges alleged the defendant of respectively possessing a glass bottle with pipes fit and intended for the inhalation of a dangerous drug, and possessing 0.3 gramme of heroin and 0.3 gramme of methylamphetamine at a public housing estate unit in Kowloon on May 25, 2010.

Magistrate Mr Abu Bakar bin Wahab adjourned the three cases until May 31, June 29 and June 28, 2010 respectively for mention, pending further enquiries by the ICAC. The defendants were remanded in the custody of the Correctional Services Department.

Six other persons, who were arrested in the ICAC operation codenamed "Phecda" commencing on Tuesday (May 25), were two suspected members of the drug trafficking syndicate as well as four other associates.

The ICAC investigation arose from a corruption complaint alleging that a police officer might have corruptly harboured suspected drug activities in Kowloon City district.

The Narcotics Bureau and the Identification Bureau of the Police have rendered full assistance to the ICAC during the investigation.

Enquiries are continuing.
